While browsing through websites using Chrome browser you may have encountered the issue ‘This webpage is not available’ with error code ‘err_spdy_protocol_error’. This error only happens when you are accessing websites using Google Chrome browser.

First, let’s understand the err_spdy_protocol_error meaning, the word SPDY in the error code represents the protocol of Chrome which was created for better security and faster loading of websites. But Google discontinued the support of SPDY protocol which leads to err_spdy_protocol_error.


Before knowing the solution of the problem, let’s understand why the problem occurs.  There are three reasons for err_spdy_protocol_error.

  1. You might be using an outdated version of Google Chrome browser.
  2. Antivirus software installed on the device might be blocking the website.
  3. The Firewall settings may have blocked the access to websites.


First, make sure that the internet connection is of good speed, sometimes poor internet connection can be the reason for the error. If the internet connection is of good quality, you can follow few simple methods to solve the issue.

Restart Chrome Browser

It is the simplest and quickest way to solve this problem, close the browser and restart Chrome. Now open the website again which showed the error. Sometimes this simple method can resolve the issue.

Clear Cache and Cookies

If you have restarted Chrome and still your favorite websites like Gmail, Wikipedia, Tumblr is showing the issue, try clearing the cookies. Follow the simple steps to clear the cookies and cache.

  • Go to the Settings of Chrome from the top right menu.
  • Click on Advanced Setting in the Setting menu.
  • Go to ‘Privacy & Security’ option and Click ‘Clear browsing data’. It will clear all the cookies & cache.
  • Close the browser and restart it.


Update Google Chrome

An outdated version of Google Chrome can cause the problem. Update the Chrome browser to the latest version by following the below steps.

  • Open Chrome and go to Settings from the top right menu.
  • Click ‘About Chrome’ in the Setting menu.
  • Update Chrome to its latest version.


Edit Antivirus Settings

Sometimes Antivirus software like Avast blocks the websites and causes ERR_SPDY_PROTOCOL_ERROR. If you have installed the Avast software, edit the setting and add your website to the exclusion list.

  • Go to Settings of Avast software.
  • Click on Active Protection in Settings menu.
  • Go to Customize for Web Shield.
  • Then click on ‘Exclusions’ and add your websites in the ‘URLs to exclude’ list.


Flush SPDY Socket

If any of the above methods didn’t work, try flushing SPDY Socket. It’s a three-step simple process.

  • Open Chrome browser, paste the following link and press Enter.


  • Click on the downward arrow at the top right corner.
  • Click ‘Flush sockets’ in the Tools menu.

Flush DNS and Renew IP

You can also try flushing DNS and Renewing IP to resolve ERR_SPDY_PROTOCOL_ERROR.

Flush DNS:

  • Go to Start menu and open Command Prompt.
  • Type ipconfig /flushdns and then press Enter. This will flush DNS.

Renew IP

You can renew IP by doing the below steps.

  • Go to Command Prompt
  • Type ipconfig /release and then press Enter.
  • Type ipconfig /renew and press Enter.
