Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes
Despite being a prologue to Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, Ground Zeroes still has a lot of life left in it. Its main mission, set in parallel dimension Guantanamo Bay, takes only an hour or so to beat and is enough to satiate fans of Kojima’s stealth third-person action series.
But if that’s not enough, there are also four side missions to unlock. These offer more challenging scenarios in the same isolated base, including the tented areas, watchtowers and storage facilities that make up the complex. The most interesting additions are Deja Vu, a PlayStation console exclusive that sees Snake recreating references from the original Metal Gear games around Camp Omega and Jamais Vu, which lets you control cyborg Raiden in a nod to Snatcher.
Regardless of what platform you play on, the graphics are impressive, particularly for 2014. Ground Zeroes looks amazing, even at 1080p resolution and 60 FPS frame rate. The lighting system, ambient occlusion and draw distance are especially striking.
Uncharted 4
Uncharted 4 is the fourth main entry in Sony’s treasure-hunting franchise. It sees Nathan Drake coaxed out of retirement by his presumed-dead brother Samuel, on a search for Captain Henry Avery’s lost treasure. The game follows the pair across jungle isles, far-flung cities and snow-capped peaks on their journey.
It features an improved story, more grounded characters and larger environments than its predecessors. It also has a more fluid combat system that allows players to go all-out in shootouts or take the stealthy route – depending on their preference.
The PC version of the game is getting a remaster alongside Uncharted: The Lost Legacy as part of the Legacy of Thieves Collection and will be available on Steam and Epic’s storefront on October 19. It supports ultra-wide screens, will have a variable framerate and includes a variety of PC-centric enhancements such as improved UI for game options, reimagined user interfaces and support for NVIDIA DLSS 2 and AMD FSR 2.0.
Bloodborne
With its Lovecraftian horror themes and brutal difficulty, Bloodborne has captivated gamers since it first came out in 2015. Developed by From Software, the creators of the Souls series, it’s an action-adventure that takes the best elements of those games and expands on them. For example, you can name and design your character from scratch with customization options that go deep enough to keep fans of the genre happy.
The game also looks fantastic, with From Software really utilizing the power of the PlayStation 4. Every detail is in place to immerse you in this dark, brooding world. In addition to a beautiful art style, you’ll be treated to some of the best sound design in recent memory. It’s this attention to detail that helps you to feel more connected to the world and makes overcoming obstacles and bosses a truly satisfying experience. Like other Souls-like titles, you can summon fellow players to help you during some of the game’s trickier fights (although this feature requires the PS4 to be online). In many ways, Bloodborne is a game that asks more of its players than most others, but in doing so it creates a tense and rewarding experience that feels unlike anything else on the console.
Ghost of Tsushima
Unlike Days Gone and Uncharted 4, which were released in late 2017, Ghost of Tsushima was an original game when it first launched in 2018. It was one of the year’s most notable releases, and if you haven’t played it yet, you should.
Sucker Punch’s historically themed open-world game is a showcase of the console’s capabilities, and it stands out as one of the system’s defining exclusives. Its takedowns are incredibly satisfying, and they require the skill of a samurai.
The Director’s Cut version of the game introduces new features that make it a more compelling experience, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. It also includes a multiplayer mode called Legends and the Iki Island expansion, which adds new gameplay and story content.
The Iki Island expansion focuses on the protagonist Jin Sakai, and adds more combat skills for him to master. It also has a story that builds on the main story.
