Fenbendazole powder is an anthelmintic medication that treats and prevents various intestinal parasites in dogs. It is available in granule, liquid and chew form and can be mixed with food to make it easier to administer.

It works by blocking the ability of worms to produce energy which eventually starves and kills them. It is also effective in killing helminth eggs and larvae.

Indications

Fenbendazole is a member of the benzimidazole family and works by blocking the ability of parasites to produce energy. This causes the worms to starve and die. It is effective against roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, certain tapeworms and nematodes.

It is also used to treat and prevent giardia in dogs. Your veterinarian may recommend testing a fecal sample 2-4 weeks after treatment to confirm that the medication worked.

Panacur(r) Powerpac is a granule form of fenbendazole that can be mixed into your dog’s food to make deworming easier. It is available from your veterinarian or through a veterinary compounding company. It is typically given once a day for several days. Your veterinarian will recommend a specific deworming schedule and will instruct you on how long to keep your pet on the medication. This medication is safe for pregnant animals.

Dosage

Fenbendazole works by disrupting the energy metabolism of parasites. It does not affect healthy animals, but will kill off parasites that are not in the best of health. This means that if you notice symptoms like weight loss, diarrhea, itching of the perianal area, vomiting or extreme bad breath, a parasitic infestation is likely the culprit.

This product is a broad spectrum anthelmintic and can be used to treat a variety of intestinal parasites in many species of animals. It is commonly prescribed by veterinarians under the brand name Panacur or Safe-Guard.

Administer 1 gram of the powder for every kg of bodyweight daily for 3 consecutive days. This can be administered by mixing the powder into feed. For example, for a 9kg dog/puppies, administer 2 sachets daily.

Side effects

Fenbendazole does not cause side effects at normal dosages. However, some pets may have allergic reactions to substances released by dying parasites if the drug is given in higher than usual doses. These reactions can include facial swelling, intense and sudden itchiness, hives, diarrhea, cold limbs, seizures or shock.

Panacur (fenbendazole) is an effective anthelmintic for CATTLE, SHEEP, GOATS and POULTRY against gastrointestinal nematodes including hookworms, roundworms and whipworms as well as hematogenous lungworms and tapeworms. It is also used off-label to treat Giardia in dogs and to combat lungworms in horses. This medication is available in 222 mg/gram granules, 222 mg/gram suspension and 100 mg/gram pastes from NexGen Pharmaceuticals. It can also be prescribed as a compounded medication by a veterinarian for those pets who cannot take FDA-approved pills in capsule form or have allergies to the ingredients in an FDA-approved pill. Compound medications are prepared on a case-by-case basis by a licensed veterinary pharmacist.

Precautions

Fenbendazole is a broad-spectrum benzimidazole antiparasitic medication that acts by disrupting microtubules in affected parasite cells. It also interferes with metabolic enzymes and pathways in affected parasites. The drug is commonly employed in veterinary medicine to treat internal parasites like roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and Taenia tapeworms, as well as the protozoal parasite Giardia. It does not, however, have efficacy against the coccidian worm Dipylidium caninum and must be used in conjunction with another dewormer.

Safe-Guard fenbendazole powder is used to prevent and control internal parasites in dogs. It is safe for all dogs ages six weeks and older and is especially beneficial in treating high worm burdens. It is also safe for pregnant dogs.

It can be mixed with a dog’s food, and the dosage will vary depending on the pet’s weight. The granules should be stored in a sealed container at room temperature. Ideally, the product should be kept out of direct sunlight.
