The aluminum layer in pex al adds to the strength of this pipe which increases its pressure rating, reduces expansion and contraction and eliminates kinking which can happen over time. The aluminum also acts as an oxygen barrier, protecting the pipe from oxygen ingress which can cause scale and deteriorate heat transfer efficiency. This pipe also resists the formation of ice.

This type of pipe is very similar to standard oxygen barrier PEX but is thicker and has an aluminum layer sandwiched between two layers of crosslinked polyethylene. It is commonly used in radiant floor heating and hydronic heating installations where maintaining fluid quality and preventing corrosion are important. Its oxygen barrier performance also makes it a good choice for plumbing systems that require an oxygen-free environment.

In addition to the aluminum layer, this style of pipe has several other features that set it apart from standard PEX. For instance, it has a memory feature that causes the tube to retain its shape after being bent. This ability to bend easily without the need for fittings, elbows or 45’s saves time and money during installation. It also eliminates the need for installers to use tie downs every few feet in a PEX run.

It is available in all standard piping sizes, from 3/8″ to 2 1/4″, and has a pressure rating of 200 psi at 73oF (1380 kPa at 23oC). It is sold in both coaxial and bell-shaped versions and is commonly purchased in coils that range from 100ft to 1,000ft long.

Like other types of PEX, pex al is available with a choice of crimp or compression fittings. Crimp fittings require a crimp tool to install, while compression fittings can be installed with regular wrenches. Both types of fittings are rated to be safe for potable water, and they have a higher temperature rating than traditional copper pipes.

This pipe is very popular for underfloor heating applications because it is very lightweight, durable and can be shaped to fit the layout of the floor. This makes it much easier to work with than metal piping, especially when installing over concrete or gypcrete. It is also less likely to crack or break from the impact of a direct lightning strike, and a recent study found that PEX-AL was significantly more resistant to damage from direct lightning strikes than CSST pipe. It is also far more affordable than other options for underfloor heating. If you do decide to install this type of system, you will need a crimp or compression fitting tool as well as a PEX-AL cutting tool. A sizing chart is included in the packaging, and all parts are stocked at most home improvement stores.
